Air BP provide free aviation fuel for air ambulances on the frontline amidst COVID-19

Last week BP fuel announced that they would be providing free fuel for emergency service road vehicles across the UK. This week, they have taken the decision to extend their offer to some air ambulance services in England and Wales, to support life-saving charity work during the COVID-19 crisis. We were delighted that they recognised Great Western Air Ambulance Charity as one of their beneficiaries after we approached them on Twitter – thank you!

We’ve seen a lot of support for front line workers during the COVID 19 pandemic. From the ‘Clap for Carers’ movement that is returning at 8pm on Thursdays, to people dropping off food parcels and treats for our crew who are working hard alongside the NHS to provide emergency medical care to those in need, we have been overwhelmed by the response.

Air BP will be providing Great Western Air Ambulance Charity, along with three other neighbouring air ambulance services, with a month’s worth of aviation fuel free of charge. The cost of fueling GWAAC’s aircraft is around £50,000 a year.

Jon Platt, CEO, Air BP said: “We are pleased to be able to play a small part and support these organisations as they continue to provide a critical service to communities in these difficult times. Our commitment to ensuring safe, reliable fuelling operations remains unwavering and we’re grateful for the hard work of our front-line Air BP operators who continue to enable us to meet the needs of our customers.”

As a charity, we have seen the number of call-outs reduce over the last couple of weeks, which is a sign that our communities are listening and acting on Government advice, staying home and staying safe. This is taking the strain off of emergency services battling the pandemic and ensuring GWAAC are able to be there for those who urgently need us.

We want to say thank you – to you, and reassure our communities that our crews are still right here and ready to respond, providing our life-saving care to those in urgent need.

We are proud to be a charity that is able to work alongside the NHS during this time. We receive no day-to-day government funding, and can only continue to be here thanks to your support.

If you’re able to, please make a donation to keep us flying. If you’re unable to donate at this time, there are many other ways you can support us here. But even a quick mention on your social media using @GWAAC would mean the world to us. Take care, stay safe.
