GWAAC is the air ambulance for North Somerset

North Somerset hugs the 24 mile coastline from Portishead down to Weston-super-Mare and dives along the tops of the Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty over to beautiful Blagdon Lake and the stunning Magnas.

Alongside a growing arts and cultural scene in Weston and a number of charming towns, there are endless countryside and coastal walks and outdoor activities across the district.

We were called out 262 times to North Somerset in 2023; more than five times a week on average to help someone in urgent need.

You can find us at some of the biggest and best events in the region, including Weston Air Festival, Dig for Victory and Mud Master.

Philippa's Q&A

North Somerset Hotspot
If you're looking for the perfect spot in North Somerset, I would head to Clevedon! I love spending a sunny afternoon munching on some classic fish and chips, taking a leisurely stroll along the beautiful seafront and don't forget to wrap it all up with a delicious Mr Whippy ice cream!
Tell us about your supporters
Having only recently joined the charity, it has been a truly rewarding experience to meet so many of our dedicated local supporters who consistently go above and beyond in aid of Great Western Air Ambulance Charity (GWAAC). Whether through organising community events, participating in fundraising activities, or spreading awareness about our cause, their commitment is inspiring. It's heartening to witness such a strong sense of community spirit and generosity, which plays a crucial role in ensuring we can continue to provide life-saving services.
Favourite fundraiser
I was lucky enough to meet a lovely lady in the B&NES area who is committed to fundraising for GWAAC through car boots, jumble sales, bingo nights and so much more. She also often provides care packages to our operational crew which always bring a smile to their faces.
What Surprised You Most About GWAAC
What surprised me most about GWAAC is the realisation that, despite receiving no government or national lottery funding, we continue to deliver exceptional, gold-standard care around the clock, every single day of the year.
Favourite Thing About Working for GWAAC
The awesome team is all about teamwork, united for one common goal. Everyone's pulling together, making things happen, and it's pretty inspiring to see. Each member brings their own flair, and together, we're unstoppable.
Favourite food
Anything sweet! I have the biggest sweet tooth and always have to have a pudding
Top TV recommendation
It's got to be Strictly Come Dancing - yes it's all about glitter and sequins.

Dick's Story

When retired policeman Dick Berry, left his doctor’s surgery on the morning of 2 February 2013, things took an unexpected turn for the worse when he crashed his van not more than fifty yards away. Dick’s survival was down to teamwork and unbelievably good luck. As former GWAAC Critical Care Doctor, Dr Leon Roberts says, “Dick lucked out with his chain of survival. On another day, it might not have worked.”
