Celebrating our Pilots on World Pilot Day

Sunday 26 April is #WorldPilotDay! We're celebrating our two amazing Base Pilots, Rich and Dan. They fly Helimed 65, Great Western Air Ambulance Charity's (GWAAC) green and blue helicopter, helping our team of Specialist and Advanced Paramedics and Critical Care Doctors get to the scene of an emergency.

Meet Pilot Rich

Pilot Rich rejoined GWAAC in July 2023, having previously spent six years as our Pilot from 2014 to 2020. Before GWAAC, Rich was a pilot in the Royal Navy for 16 years, flying ‘Sea Kings’ and ‘Squirrels’. Rich is a Bath resident and is proud to serve his city and the surrounding area.

Meet Pilot Dan

On 11 November 2025, we welcomed our new Pilot, Dan Mansell, to GWAAC. Dan is one of our permanent base Pilots and joins us from a varied civilian aviation background. Having flown for East Anglian Air Ambulance, supported oil and gas operations in the North Sea, and worked with the National Police Air Service, Dan brings a wealth of experience to the team.
