Winter HEMS – the challenges the cold months bring to our crew
October 29, 2024"I haven’t looked back since"
Lesley Dibbins has been a dedicated volunteer at the Westbury-on-Trym Great Western Air Ambulance Charity (GWAAC) shop since 2020. Her journey began during a challenging time and her story is a testament to the positive impact of volunteering.
When the pandemic hit, Lesley faced losing her job and uncertainty. “I was on furlough for a year and then, along with a group of others, I was made redundant” she recalls. Initially seeking paid work, Lesley found fulfilment in volunteering. “I realised there’s a lot to give back. I haven’t looked back since,”
"I enjoy doing displays"
Volunteering twice a week, Lesley brings enthusiasm and skill to various tasks. From steaming and cleaning clothes to creating engaging displays, she’s always ready to help: “I enjoy doing displays, although I like to help out in any way.”
Her attention to detail ensures items are arranged attractively. Lesley says, “There’s more of a chance people will buy something when they see it in a display rather than off on its own.” And it shows — Lesley’s creativity and dedication significantly contribute to the shop’s success.
For Lesley, volunteering is about more than just completing tasks; it’s about the people she meets along the way. “I enjoy the people I meet—both the customers and my fellow volunteers - that’s the main thing” she shares. She adds that the supportive atmosphere at the shop makes her role even more rewarding.
"Make a difference with us"
Lesley’s story highlights the benefits volunteering can have for both volunteers themselves and those they help. If you’ve been inspired by Lesley’s journey and want to make a difference, consider volunteering at your local GWAAC shop. Whether you can spare a few hours a week, or maybe more, your support will help us continue our lifesaving work.

It’s definitely a team effort. I feel welcomed, always thanked at the end of a shift, and I feel like I’ve done something worthwhile with my day before I move on to my own stuff.
