In September 2025, Bristol Airport arranged for a team of determined cyclists to ride from the Brunel Museum in London to the Airport itself. This incredible challenge was organised to raise funds for our lifesaving work and saw Great Western Air Ambulance Charity (GWAAC) join forces with Bristol Airport employees to battle the 257.5 km journey.
The challenge took two days and saw participants take on the scenic Great West Way route, riding through countryside and historic towns before crossing the finish line at the Airport. Meanwhile, colleagues back at the terminal cycled the equivalent distance on exercise bikes in the departure lounge, with passengers and visitors showing their support both verbally and by dropping change in collection buckets.
As the cyclists approached the end of their challenge, they were welcomed at Bristol Airport by other staff and our own on-duty Critical Care Team. After a gruelling two days, they were able to come together and celebrate their shared accomplishment.
In total an incredible £87,000 was raised for GWAAC. This significantly contributed to the staggering £210,000 that Bristol Airport fundraised for GWAAC during its two-year partnership with our charity during 2024 and 2025.
“Taking part in the fundraising bike ride reminded me of how much you rely on the team around you to keep going. It’s the same for us at GWAAC and with my day job as part of the Critical Care Team. We can only be there for people in their worst moments because of support like this. On behalf of all of us, a huge thank you to everyone at Bristol Airport for going the distance for GWAAC. This team have raised enough to fund over 36 missions which is incredible!”

Following the remarkable success of Bristol Airport’s challenge, we were motivated to give our supporters the opportunity to replicate it in 2026. We wanted to create an opportunity for supporters to experience a similar challenge while raising funds for our lifesaving service. That’s why we are running our London to Bristol Bike Ride on Friday 18 and Saturday 19 September.
This two-day cycle will see the team travel from Windsor Castle in London, all the way to our Almondsbury Airbase, tackling 231.1 km with an overnight stay in the Wiltshire town of Marlborough.
This is an excellent opportunity to challenge yourself, bond with fellow cyclists and take on a truly remarkable event, all whilst supporting a cause that matters to you.
