Two days, 143.6 miles – the journey of a lifetime

Meet Asal, a dedicated volunteer at Great Western Air Ambulance Charity (GWAAC) shop in Cheltenham. With a strong background in education and charity work, she brings experience, kindness and a real passion for helping others to the team. Having volunteered on a more sporadic basis over the past two years, her journey shows how flexible volunteering can fit around everyday life.
A background in helping others
Before joining the shop team, Asal spent many years working as a primary school teacher and later became a head teacher, dedicating her career to supporting young people and helping them grow.
Alongside her teaching career, Asal also built up a wealth of experience in charity work. Through her involvement in youth, poverty and disability charities, she developed a strong belief in giving back to the community.
“I walked in and asked to volunteer.”
Asal moved to the UK to support her husband, who is pursuing a PhD in film and television at the University of Gloucestershire.
With a clear passion for charity and a willingness to get involved, getting started was as simple as stepping through the door.
That moment marked the beginning of her journey with the shop. Over the past two years, she has volunteered in and out, giving her time whenever she can.
Her experience shows just how flexible volunteering with GWAAC can be, fitting around different schedules and commitments.

Building confidence and connection
Volunteering has given Asal the opportunity to build her confidence and develop her communication skills in a supportive and welcoming environment.
“I am improving my English language,” she says. As a trilingual volunteer, Asal also speaks Persian and French, allowing her to connect with a wide range of customers.
Her rich background and warm nature help create a welcoming atmosphere in the shop, fostering connections with people from across the Cheltenham community.
Making a Difference
Asal’s story shows how volunteering can make a real difference, not only to the community but to the individual too. Her experience, positivity and willingness to help others make her a valued part of the team.
