Epic Abseil

Dare the Drop

Going down the Gate for GWAAC

Will you take on the challenge and dare to drop 75ft from the roof of Ashton Gate Stadium in support of your local air ambulance charity?

Great Western Air Ambulance Charity are testing your head for heights with a daredevil day at the home of Bristol sport. Participants will check in and get a full safety briefing from the abseil experts at Rock Outdoors before being kitted up and led up the stands and onto the roof of the Dolman Stand, a view that very few people get to experience!

Once on the roof you will be brought to the abseil spot and talked through the process before stepping up to the edge, leaning back and daring the drop!

All participants will receive:

  • Welcome pack and fundraising advice and support.
  • Online fundraising resources to help you reach your fundraising target
  • A uniquely Bristol experience
  • Bragging rights every time you visit the Stadium!

FAQs

23 metres/ 75 feet

Are there any restrictions?

  • All participants must be aged 12 or over on the date of the event. If under 18 they must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian on the day.
  • The weight restriction for this event is 20 stone. If you are at, approaching or over this weight, please get in touch and we will discuss the possibility of participation with the events company.
  • How accessible is the event?

Whilst every effort is made to ensure our events are accessible, this cannot always be achieved. Getting to the abseil site will involve walking up steps to the top of the stand and then climbing up two ladders and through hatches to access the roof itself.

How fit do I need to be to take part?

All participants are required to have a reasonable level of mobility, being able to climb a couple of flights of stairs and access a loft via a ladder are examples of the mobility needed for this event. If you are unsure or have any medical conditions which could impact your participation, we recommend you speak with your doctor in advance.

How long does the abseil take?

We expect participants to spend around 1.5 hours on site from registration to competing the abseil.

Will there be parking on the day?

Parking is available at Ashton Gate Stadium

What do I need to bring?

    • Warm clothing (trousers and long sleeves are advised)
    • Trainers or walking boots (no heels, flip flops or open toe shoes)
    • We will have tea and coffee on offer but do recommend that you bring your own water and snacks

    Can I register with friends?

There are twelve slots per hour. If you would like to abseil with friends or family we recommend all booking together and selecting the same time slot or time slots next to each other. We will not be able to change anything around on the day.

    How do I start fundraising?

    • Our charity staff are here to help you from setting up an online fundraising page to thinking of and executing some fun ideas to raise those all important funds.
    • Each participant will receive a Welcome Pack that will walk you through the steps to start fundraising.
    • All of the money raised will go to keeping our essential service running, allowing our critical care crew to be there for local people on their worst day.

What if I don’t reach the minimum sponsorship target?

    • By registering for this challenge, you are pledging to raise the minimum sponsorship (not including Gift Aid) for GWAAC and understand that it is the aim of this challenge to raise as much as possible for your local air ambulance.
    • You must have fundraised and banked at least 75% of the target one week before the event date. If you cannot meet this target, then your place may be forfeited unless you make up the balance yourself. The remaining must be paid in no later than four weeks after the event date.
    • If at any point you feel unable to raise the pledged amount, you must inform your GWAAC contact immediately so that they can offer assistance with fundraising.

What if I cannot attend on the day due to illness or injury?
Unfortunately this is a one day event and we are unable to reschedule places for people who are unable to attend on the day. In this situation we would not be able to offer a refund.
What if I am late for my booked time slot?
We have a limited amount of timeslots available for the abseil and if for any reason you are not able to take part in the abseil within your allocated timeslot, we will try our best to allocate you an alternative timeslot however, we can’t guarantee availability outside of your booked timeslot which could lead to not taking part in the abseil at all.
