Retail Volunteer Story – Steve

Meet Steve Lush, a dedicated volunteer at the Great Western Air Ambulance Charity (GWAAC) shop in Cinderford. Steve plays a vital role in testing donated electrical items and moving stock between shops across Gloucestershire and South Gloucestershire, helping to keep the shelves full of items for customers to purchase.

His daughter Ros is the Assistant Manager at the Cinderford shop, and it was through her that Steve first heard about an opportunity to get involved. What started as a favour soon grew into a regular commitment that Steve enjoys, whilst it also makes a lasting impact.

Volunteering with purpose

Steve first began volunteering when Ros mentioned that donated stock was piling up. He initially stepped in to move items from Gloucester to Cinderford but quickly became part of the wider team. Now, he regularly chips in to help move stock across a variety of our shops and carries out Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) so electrical goods can be safely sold.

One moment that really struck him was seeing the helicopter in action during a call-out, a reminder of just how crucial Helimed 65 and the critical care cars are, and how every role in the shops is integral to keeping GWAAC operational.

Community and connection

Alongside GWAAC, Steve also gives his time to the Dean Green Team, a conservation group that looks after the local environment. “I started doing that to meet people and get some real physical exercise,” he explains. The variety between outdoor conservation work and shop volunteering offers a healthy balance.

But for Steve, it is the people who make the biggest difference. “The other volunteers and the staff make it enjoyable,” he says. He values the camaraderie that comes from visiting different shops and meeting new faces. “I met a new mate at the Thornbury shop recently; it’s great to connect with others.”

In his nearly two years with GWAAC, Steve has found purpose, connection, and the knowledge that he is part of something bigger. He has also seen how volunteering opens doors for others – helping people gain experience, grow their confidence, learn new skills, or simply meet new friends.
