Defib Guardians
Help us ensure our defibrillators are ready to save a life
Why is being a Defib Guardian important?
Forming part of the chain of survival, CPR and defibrillation before an ambulance arrives can boost cardiac arrest survival rates from less than 10% to over 70%. As a Defib Guardian, you will help ensure that a GWAAC defib is always ready to make a lifesaving difference.
A Defib Guardian is assigned a specific device close to them through The Circuit, which is the system 999 call-handlers use to find nearby defibs during an emergency. The Defib Guardian is then responsible for conducting monthly checks on the defib to ensure that it is still ready to save a life, as well as being on hand to get the defibrillator back online once it has been used in an emergency.
If you'd like to become a Defib Guardian, take a look at our list of defibs requiring a Guardian below.

- Wine Street, Bristol, BS1 2BB
- Crossfit Trym, High Street, Bristol, BS9 3ED
- Avonmouth Old Boys Rugby Club, Barracks Lane, Bristol, BS11 9NG
We're also looking for Circuit Breakers in BS1, BS2, BS4, BS11, BS15 and BS16,
Your role as a Defib Guardian
- First you will need to register yourself with The Circuit by creating an account and accepting the Guardian Nomination
- You will then need to perform a 'status check' of your device using your new The Circuit account, before setting the device to 'available and emergency ready'
- Once the device, is setup on The Circuit, you'll need to perform a monthly check to ensure all details are still correct. This includes checking the cabinet code, address, map and What3Words are all still correct.
- You will receive emails when the device may have been used. The Circuit will automatically set the device to unavailable and so it will not be known to 999 call handlers until it is set back to available. The majority of the time it won't have been used and you just need to log back in and perform a status check to get it back up and running. If it has been used then let us know and we can replace the pads for you
- To help people return the device to its cabinet, you will need ensure your device has been branded with a sticker and tag on the back with details of where the cabinet is. You are welcome to put a mobile number or your email on this for people to use if getting the device back to the cabinet proves an issue.
