Albie’s story – A Grandparent’s perspective
December 22, 2025At Great Western Air Ambulance Charity (GWAAC), we know that our mission is only possible because of the remarkable individuals who choose to support us. Every hour given, every conversation had, and every skill shared helps keep our crews flying and saving lives.
This year, we are delighted to announce that five outstanding members of our Ground Crew, which is the name we affectionately give to our team of volunteers, have been recognised by Room to Reward, a volunteer-recognition charity that gifts short breaks to those who go above and beyond.
Each of these individuals represents the very best of GWAAC: commitment, compassion, resilience, and a genuine desire to help others. We are proud to celebrate them.
Janet Adams
Janet brings dedication, enthusiasm, and creativity to everything she does. With over 120 hours already volunteered in 2025, she is a key presence at events, an inspiring fundraiser, and someone whose support runs deep, shaped by her own family’s connection to the charity.
From taking part in our Dare the Drop abseil to crafting handmade items that raise vital funds, Janet is a treasured member of our Ground Crew whose passion helps drive our mission forward.

Steve Norton
Steve has contributed more than 503 hours this year, working tirelessly across a range of roles. He services collection tins across the region, supports the office team, represents GWAAC at events, and plays a central part in our defibrillator mapping work.
His efforts directly strengthen community safety and ensure defibrillators are ready when they are needed most. Steve’s humility means he never seeks the spotlight, but his impact speaks for itself.

Phil Cocks
As a Talks Volunteer and Heartstarter, Phil helps hundreds of people understand what to do in a life-threatening emergency. He also supports our Great Western Hearts Defib Project, helping improve access to lifesaving equipment across the region.
Phil’s clear communication, calm manner, and deep commitment make him an exceptional ambassador for GWAAC.

Joanna
Joanna joined our retail team in 2020 and has become one of our most dedicated volunteers, giving more than 1,000 hours last year alone. Her commitment is remarkable, and her journey is deeply inspiring.
After surviving complex heart surgeries as a baby, Joanna now gives back by supporting our Westbury-on-Trym shop with reliability, humour, and kindness. She plays a key role in creating a welcoming and organised environment for customers and donors.

Claire Alibone
Claire leans on her nursing expertise to volunteer with Great Western Hearts, teaching CPR and defibrillator skills to students and community groups. Her patient, reassuring approach helps people feel confident learning essential and sometimes intimidating skills.
She is reliable, often travelling at short notice to ensure workshops can go ahead, and her contribution significantly strengthens community readiness in emergencies.

A Heartfelt Thank You
To Janet, Steve, Phil, Joanna and Claire:
